Task 5 - B
Task 5 - B
The magazine which I am choosing to look at is Kerrang! Magazine, while doing task A, I got some pictures of new releases of Kerrang! Which show how they advertise themselves/bands/etc,
When looking around in the supermarkets and how the magazines were laid out, I realised that many magazines have very similar layouts, with the MCU in the middle and the tittle at the top, etc. All magazines are produced by publishers. Publishers are the institution's which produce the magazine. For example, in the UK, there are four main distributors, who are EMAP, Natmag, Conde nast and IPC. These publishers will control the editorial content in which is used in the magazine, this can also include the layout and design of the magazine. When they decide to control the content, they decide which elements they want or think should visible on the front cover.
How a magazine is made will depend on many different things, such as the type of magazine, the marketing of the magazine, the genre, audience, and such. When marketing, a magazine must have a unique selling point, this will allow the magazine to compete with other magazines in order for the magazine to be able to sell itself, for instance, if a band is making a new album, and this magazine is the first to interview, having this band on the front with that caption, would end up making that magazine sell more to that fanbase.
There are three main ways of distributing. The first method being Sale and Return. This is one of the most common and popular models of distribution. Sale or return is the system which is used by magazine and newspaper distributors with news-stand etc. If there are any copies in which are not sold, they are sent back to the distributor at no cost of the retailer. This has a benefit for the retailer as there is no risk of wastage involved as it is sent back, However, it is a very wasteful process which can be bad for the environment which can cause problems for the distributor and/or publisher.
Another method of distribution is called Postal Subscription, in which Kerrang! Use. Regular readers of the magazine, particularly niche publications, have the option to subscribe to a specific magazine in which will be posted to them roughly every-time the magazine is published, as an example, kerrang! Comes out every Wednesday, so im guessing the magazine would arrive every Wednesday or later/earlier in the week for subscribers. These magazines, such as kerrang!, make all the revenue from advertising on social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and such; Links to Kerrang! Facebook, Twitter and website, which advertises Kerrang! Radio and TV. (insert twitter and facebook links)
The last method i know of is Electronic Distribution, which is a very popular method used today, as technology is growing, this gives companies the power to advertise to millions at low costs. One way is through apps on smart phones, free apps which provide things such as radio, which is what Kerrang! Have. Kerrang! Also have a general app for news updates and more. (insert screenshots here), magazines such as kerrang have these apps as electronic reading etc is much more efficient in both time and money for readers, especially as kerrang! Have a low target audience age. E-zines are another way of electrically distributing, They are different from magazine websites, in that they are electronic versions of the magazine, with similar features such as pages that can be turned, adverts, page numbers, poster pages, and more. These E-zines will be delivered through email to those who subscribe or pay.
Task 5 - A
Task 5 - A
The first shop that i visited to look for music magazines was Asda. The magazines shelves were disorganised and messy, with different magazines in the wrong places, but luckily, the music section was okay. There were three different shelves, which each had three sections, the middle shelf was the music shelf, which had three different sections, top, middle, and bottom, the bottom shelf was the shelf which was easiest to see, because it was in the light, etc, but the middle shelf was eye level, but quite dark/hard to see. With the way the shelves were made and laid out, you also got to see the whole magazine, not just a quarter, which meant that the whole front cover could be seen, so advertisements, imagery and such were easily noticed.
As you can see, there are three different shelves, and with this, they are divided into three, NME and ROCKSOUND are featured in the middle, Where as Hammer and Kerrang!
With this, the audience are immediately able to see key things, such as who is featured on the magazine, anything which comes free such as CD's and Posters, which 3 of these magazines do, being kerrang!, hammer, and Classic Rock. As shown below -

Task 4 evaluation
Task 4 Evaluation
What went well with my magazine was that in my opinion, the overall
layout of my magazine and my font consistently was good, this was backed up by
my audience feedback ‘The fonts and overall style of the magazine are
consistent’ which shows that my magazine follows a structure.
The overall photography of my Front cover and Contents page
were classed as ordinary. In my opinion, the picture on the front of the
magazine is of a BTEC music student which links to the masthead, which is
student voice, however when I asked a student about how they felt about this
image they said that the overall image is angled and placed nicely, but they
felt that the image had no link to the rest of the magazine, and that the
background is quite boring. The pictures used on the contents page are classed
as quite nice, in my opinion, I have tried to use different angles as well as
ranging in distance being close up etc. My photographs also link to what’s
being featured in the contents page. On my blog, no one who commented spoke
about my photography, which makes me think that none of the pictures were
alarming and/or that bad.
The way that my images were placed were also not commented
on, however in my opinion, my images were placed quite nicely, as in the
contents page they follow a structure on the left hand side of the page and
then the main image from the front cover on the right. The images have a
controlled brightness/contrast which makes them easier to see, however, if I was
to re manipulate the front cover image I would add more brightness and less
contrast as there are quite harsh shadows on the face. My page layout was commented on as being
consistent, with different sections of the pages being clearly identified, as
well as this, my font was commented on as being consistent, showing that my
layout and fonts combined nicely together, which is what I wanted, however, I was
also told that the overall layout looked quite shabby, meaning that works were
cut off and the margins were not always consistent, which is what I could
improve on. With cover lines and such, I was told that some of my text could
have been moved around to areas so they would have been easier to read, as well
as organising the layout of text and writing.
I think that if I had the chance to improve, I would change
where the text is placed, as I agree that some of the text is unclear and
unappealing, I would also add more colour to the page, as I only used black
white and a tiny bit of green. As well as this, I would possibly place the
masthead differently, as it doesn't stand out as much as it could.
Three key points for development when producing the main
task –
·
Placement for text is very important, always
think about composition and layout
·
Make sure that the quality control of the
magazine is more consistent and less Lacklustre
·
Make sure my cover line (s) are clear

Kerrang Press Pack
Kerrang Press Pack / Audience
When opening the kerrang Press Pack, apart from the first page being just an image saying kerrang, the second page is something called “Why Advertise” this page is basically a slide which is full of all the facts and general information you’d want to know, such as the median age, being 22, how many people read kerrang, being 404,000** and such. With this, the layout looks very simple and easy to read, you have got quite based fonts, colours, and such, where the audience see what they want and fast, and if you really don't want to read, the facts are placed to the left of the page, in bullet point form.
The third slide is named “The Mission”. This slide is where we can see what the aim of kerrang is, and why they make kerrang, again, the font is nicely sized and coloured, to the point where keywords are even highlighted for you, looking appealing for the eye as well as really exaggerating the point they're trying to get across, This whole page was written by an important editor, Nichola Browne (Which is placed at the bottom of the text)
The next page is then a page where kerrang have gone out and asked someone who readers kerrang their opinion on the magazine, and what they do, as a job, for their hobbies, etc, this helps kerrang to know who exactly there audience are, what they work at, their income as an average, so they can really base their magazine off the surveys and constantly improve the magazine to fit in with the trends. The layout again is very nice and simple - black and white font, the small font is still so clear to read, and the masthead being noticeable with the magazine named “Kerrang” in.
The “Influence” slide is one of my favourites, the magazine have done a slide based off of where they got their influences from, this slide also gives an idea of the type of give-aways they do as a whole. Their is then a slide called the idea, which explains how their publisher will combine with the magazine to combine skills and give aways to really engage young people to read the magazine, as they are the main target audience.
The following slide, “Ad schedule” just gives the reader how much and how long kerrang spend on advertising every year or month, the slide also provides information for when magazines are sold and when the deadline is to buy the magazine, they usually leave around a 16 day gap for the magazine to be brought before the deadline hits. The following two or three slides down goes into Ad specs and advertising rates into detail., explaining prices and sizes, etc.
The slide after this offers information about social networking, it offers the site name, the amount of twitter followers they have, facebook likes as well, which can help to find out which of the sites is more popular, which is the easier to grab the attention of the target audience is, and more.
The last page of the press pack is a contact page, with addresses and phone numbers which you can contact anyone on if needed.
Kerrang Magazine
Kerrang Magazine
The title of the magazine is Kerrang! which suggests its a heavy metal magazine as it is the name of the sound heavy metal makes while being distorted through teens ears. The ‘ Stereotypical ‘ noise which a guitar makes. This title suits the genre of the magazine as the rest of the magazine does represent bands from that genre - being heavy-metal, rock.
- The Masthead of the magazine has a font which is quite large, looks cheesy - as in, it has that ‘grunge’ theme to it, with the cracked and broken lines going through out, representing the rock genre, as that music can be associated with smashing of guitars, and such.
- The title is the colour black, with a white boarder behind it, which can imply that the magazine is a dark metal magazine. Therefore can imply that target audience would also be associated with wearing black clothes, as well as the artists they associate with. Although this title is obviously important, it is mostly covered by the heads of the main image of the magazine, which implies that in order for them to really indulge the audience into looking and wanting the magazine, they need to advertise all they can - being the artists. (The Artists, and main image - are important)

Theme: Front cover
– The overall theme is white (background), black, red, yellow and blue, this appeals to the target audience as most of the colours are dark colours and rock is associated with being dark, although they have used bright colours as well to make certain content stand out. The theme of the magazine also ties in together well, meaning that the colours used on the front cover will be used in another part of the magazine as well - for example, yellow stands out a lot here - the DPS featuring the “Rock and roll Excess” may possibly have a yellow background, Making the audience have that sense of Deja vu or recognition.

Cover Lines: Front Cover
– Most of the lines that have been selected are rock and heavy metal artists who are included in the magazine, they have also put in teasers, for an example, rocks biggest gig guide, 15 studio reports, a poster special and a post-hardcore vs a TV show - all these will help to grab the attention of the audience and persuade them to pick up and possibly buy the magazine. The cover lines have been written in colloquial language which appeals to the target audience because 15-19 year olds are more likely to understand colloquial language rather than formal language. The cover lines have been written in white, black, blue, red and yellow which is the same as the over theme, with doing this, all of the theme - a long with the background, ties together, this also makes different texts stand out - having a different colour per cover-line will really help the audience differ what they see and what they want to read, with this, the audience know what sort of things will be featured in the magazine before they even open to the contents page.

Central Image:
– The central image is of the pop ‘punk’ band All Time Low, this shows that the magazine doesn’t specialise in one genre of music but instead they specialise in a few genre’s. The magazine wants to be associated with any band to do with rock/heavy metal or punk.
– The image is using direct address, this creates a close relationship with the reader because the band is looking straight at the reader and it seems the reader is there when the image was taken.
– They are all wearing dark coloured clothes, with one wearing a scarf and one wearing a hat. Two members of the band are showing the readers their tattoo’s, two of the members are making a sign of the horns when one is pointing to the reader. This links to the readership because the sign of the horns is a hand gesture made by a lot of heavy metal artists.
– The anchorage text of the image is the name of the band and telling the UK to watch out as they have arrived, they have also used the words puke, nudity and total mayhem, this appeals to the audience as most fans of heavy metal like wild bands and mayhem.
– The camera angle used is a long shot of all of the members; Mid shot - ,but you are are able to see them to the knee. The lighting of the shot is quite high - there are no deep shadows but more highlights, They are posing in the stereotypical way - the rock sign with the hands, the angry looking faces and such.

Language:
– The language is colloquial, it gives the impression the magazine wants to be modern and wants to keep up with the types of words teenagers use in modern day society, they keep subheadings short and sweet “ Puke! Nudity! Total Mayhem!”.

Skyline:
– In the skyline, the magazine is showing there is 15 studio reports and some pages about the band Asking Alexandria, this is because the magazine wants to show as much famous bands/artists as they can so more people who like these genres will be persuaded to buy to read about them / buy the magazine. Most of the skyline is yellow and black, this contrasts to the white background to make the skyline stand out from the rest of the magazine. Skylines can also be quite important as sometimes depending on where the magazine is placed, this may be the first thing that you read.

Images:
– There are other images featured in the front cover apart from the main image. For example, there is some images of New Found Glory, Sum 41, Letlive, While She Sleeps and Asking Alexandria- Some other bands are who associated to be quite popular in that genre of music - grabbing the attention of fans who may not be interested in all time low, but may love while she sleeps, etc, this also helps as right next to the image, there is A big circle advertising the fact that Kerrang offer Free posters, and that this is a special, not only that, but it costs the same amount it usually was - so even though you're paying the same amount, it looks better because of the “Special” and “Free posters” .In most of these images, you can see that the main vocalist of these bands are holding a microphone looking at what appears to be a crowd - this Can involve the audience, for instance if they were at that concert or gig. All of these bands are hardcore rock bands, this shows the magazine wants to mainly be associated with all types of rock. The angle used in all of these images is a mid shot / but usually never face on.

Content: Front cover
– The content that is shown on the front cover is mainly focused on famous rock, punk, indie and heavy metal artists, this shows the target audience only really wants to read about artists instead of upcoming events and also the history of these specific bands, these bands are usually the bands who are generally focused in the media at this time, which is why the band of the cover will change every week - if, per say, all time low have just created an album, or are like this coming to the UK, it would be stupid not to make them cover the front. (Publicity)
– As i mentioned before, the main artist which has been chosen for the front cover are All Time Low, the magazine has picked All Time Low is because they were a very famous heavy metal band at that time and anyone who is a fan of the genre will definitely know who they are and therefore will want to buy that magazine. This helps both the band and magazine to grow in popularity.

House Style: Front cover
– The font, position and colour of the title and the background colour of the front cover is the same in every addition of the magazine, they do this so their target audience can clearly see which magazine Kerrang! Is, which means that no matter where or how the magazine is placed, the readers are most likely to determine theirs compared to Q, OR hammer. This links to their readership because 15-19 year olds will know exactly what they want and wont want to be looking around for the magazine - Being the target audience.

Layout:
– The front cover looks to be busy, informal and canted. This appeals to the reader because the reader will feel like they are getting more for there money - as it appears that due to everything being cramped, there must be a lot in this magazine, creating the illusion its worth the money, or more, so they should buy that magazine.

Price:
– The cost of this magazine is £2.20. However as there audience is for quite young people as well as old, the price of the magazine has also had some issue to it. The magazine looks to cost more than it actually does because even though it looks like it has been thrown together the front cover does look organised. The price is always placed in the barcode, which is usually, always placed on the lower left of kerrang, this is so your eyes aren't immediately drawn to the barcode, but its there once your eyes have finished exploring.

Contents - More detail
Titles of stories - Most of the names of these articles are of famous artists in the industry, this can suggest that they want to concentrate on the artists who are big in the media at the moment compare to a band who’s only had one gig - this is all done in order to keep their target audience interested.
The font changes dependent on what's being written, for instance, for the section names, such as, features, that will be written in bright yellow, with quite a big size - these subheadings underneath will be written in the same font, but black, and way smaller, then finally, the name pages, which are slightly bigger or the same size as the subheadings, but written in red, making them stand out, therefore making life easier for the reader, which in my opinion, makes them want to buy the magazine more, id much rather buy a magazine which is easy to read / nicely laid out, plus, since the audience is for teens and young 20’s, we’re lazy, meaning we wont be bothered if we cant find the page number, we’ll put the magazine down.
This contents page also comes in sections - The contents page is split up into 9 different sections, Feedback, Win!, News, Live reviews, Poster, Features, and more, this is so if someone is just picking up the magazine to get an overview of what the magazine holds, they can do it relatively quickly, they can see what exact posters are in their, what / how good bands are, if they’re soon to be seeing that band - overall it makes the magazine look tidy and straight to the point. They are then split up into headers, subheadings, etc. This makes it then easier again to find out what you want, for example, i go to reviews, then i want to know exactly whos being reviewed, that's a POPULAR artist, so Attack Attack! Is written in bold.
The contents, as i said before, are mostly featured on these rock / heavymetal bands who at that currant moment, are important to the media, for example, if another magazine are featuring another rock band who are huge, kerrang need to try get someone better, therefore kerrang will always featured the most ‘important on the contents, with either images, small bulks of text, or in these sections.
The contents page has a very straight forward but rough layout - we have around three main sections - the left, being the images with some tasters of articles, the right side, which is the sections, then the bottom of the magazine, which is the editors note, we also have a small advertisement on the bottom right which is quite small and doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the layout and colours, but that's good as it catches attention. We then have the masthead at the top being “Kerrang” and “Contents” where there is a red background/box holding the white and black text on top.
Images - The central image is of the Bronx/Mariach messing around ‘as such’ i believe this image is taken from a gig. This shows that the magazine does not take things are seriously as others, they like to show the ‘real’ side of what they know to be music. All of the people in the image are wearing quite dark colours, or no shirts, are look quite tired and sweaty, which can appeal to the audience and give them that sense of “oh I wish I was there” which can further convince them to buy the magazine and get a sense of what gigs are all about. The images take up more space than the writing, which implies that the magazine wants buyers to mainly focus on the images, also linking to the target audience who are young teens to mid 20’s, again showing how we’re lazy and much rather enjoy these images than text. There are also three other images on this contents. 1 being on the lower left, which is a quite dark image of the editor. Another two placed on the main image, both with numbers - advertising articles related to the main image.
Editors note - There is a note at the bottom left which is written by the editor, this is to give the readers an insight on what happened in order to get the information for this weeks magazine, what will be expected in the magazine also an opinion on what he feels about it, This is sometimes done to show off what the artists are featured i
how they feel about the artists - done to persuade and excite the reader.
Double Page Spread
There is only one image that's featuring on this DPS, and its an image of the main person who is written about in the article, Oli Sykes, this image takes up around 1 and 1/4 of the overall DPS. Oli Sykes is a famous singer/songwriter from the band Bring Me The Horizon who are very popular to Kerrang’s target audience being young teens to mid 20’s. The image is a mid-shot, chest up, and has a very grunge set to it - being the pose and the way he is dressed. The lighting of the image is very even, there are no shadows meaning that no features of his are hidden, he would be wearing make up which will make his skin look clear as well as photoshop making his overall appearance appealing to the females in the audience. There is no background of the image, apart from the background of the overall DPS.
The masthead of the DPS, being ‘How to write the hottest album of 2013’ Stands out massively compared to the rest of the text due to the font size and colours, as the background is yellow and white, the blue and black text becomes automatically the first thing you can read. This font stays relatively the same through out this DPS except from the ‘By Oli Sykes; Which is the only different front featured - this is as it is more ‘rough’ as the band he is in are counted as heavy metal, that is a good way to portray his look and sound. The font choices used are very bold and easy to read, they also look simple yet appealing. However the actual article has very small font and can be quite hard to read. They have also used a pull-quote from the article which is placed to the left of the image “I was in a bad place before. Now i feel more clear-headed, more awake” which can help to almost give away what the article is based upon. There are around 3 sections of main text placed on this DPS, the text below the masthead, then the two texts placed below that next to each other. This is where the interview based article begins. The overall structure of the DPS looks neat tidy, easy to read or know what's written, and appealing to the eye, the colours used all go together nicely, and are not too intense for the eye.
The language used through out this DPS is quite sophisticated, as the article/interview is quite serious, from this singer moving on from a bad time of his to a good, which is how and why an album became released, but at the same time, the overall tone is quite relaxed, as the target audience are usually below 30, there is no need to get ‘too’ serious, or the audience will feel bored.
The overall DPS suits the genre of the magazine very well - they have a very popular lead singer of a heavy metal band featuring on the pages, which will automatically appeal to the female audience, the interview is then also sort of a sob story, which again, people will be very interested in reading in. As well as this, the colours, even though they are not the darkest, suit the Indie side of the magazine. Kerrang magazine is published by Bauer Media
