Semiotics – Roland Barthes (Notes)

‘Image, Music, Text ‘Book by Roland Barthes – Very analytical book – how media is given off

Denotation – What you can see (Obvious meaning) (Signifier)
Connotation – Hidden meaning/the messages given (Signified)
Masthead – name of magazine
Main Image – Central focal point / Visual point / Sex appeal
Main cover line – has to relate to main person (s)
Anchorage – Text anchors to image / meaning behind image and or cover
Largest font – Masthead
2nd largest font – Main Cover line
Model is usually in front of the text to show importance
Eye line match is also important – any magazine, usually the model is looking straight at the audience to address/engage them directly
Pull quotes or cover lines help to engage audience – play on words – key words
Skyline – set of small information above Masthead aka
‘John Lennon / Neyo / fed up/ etc. ‘
Bar code – Shows your branded – with the price/date/issue
Price has to reflect audience and genre
Teasers – all other information on front of magazine
Lower left third – Free cd or stuff etc, they will be on the lower left to entice customers.
