Analysing music magazines

Group task – Analysing music magazines

  1. How many pages are used for the contents – 1 page
  2. Are all editorial items listed – Not all items are listed, for example, page 27, which is a poster and a DPS, but isn't listed in the contents page.
  3. How many sections are there, and what are they? How have the sections and pages been organised? is there any other? consider columns, alignment, captions, textbox's? - 1 Feedback section, 1 news section, 1 live reviews section, poster section, the heros issue section, feature section, album section, gig guide section, the ultimate rockstar test section, one image with sub-heading and small text, one section in the lower right hand corner which is an advertisement, and beside this on the lower right is an introduction from the editor 'james' with a small image to accompany. The sections have been organised with the image being on the left, taking up around half the page, then the text (group of sections being the contents) on the right.  The introduction is than below the image with quite a small text and image as it has lower importance. The advertisement is also quite small and in the lower right hand corner so that it doesn't catch the audience's eye.  The heading of the image is covered with the picture to make the audience automatically look at the image. The caption of the image is at the bottom, where after you've seen the image, you can then see a little text etc to explain. The font sizes through out the contents page is relatively small so it doesn't look overwhelming.
  4. Which images are used? think of shot type, framing, lighting and other elements of mise en scene. What are the connotations? how do the images link to the listenings in the content page? - There are a total of two images on the contents page - the first image, being the main image of Andrew W.K who is advertising his free shirt which you can win, which links with the caption, which is advertising how you can enter to win the shirt, this then links with the text below. The second image is then the editor of the magazine being James - this image links with the text next to the image being his introduction.
  5. How does the contents page reflect the front cover - The contents page reflects the front cover as firstly theyre both quite messy and unorganised, the images both cover the main writing and then the fonts are both different along with the colours of texts. The contents page also explains or shows everything that was on the cover. They both also have a red box at the top with main information in.
Double spread analysis

The piece of writing was about a band called Chemical Romance the band , this article was explaining their journey while recording or producing their album for the past three years. At the beginning of the article,  they discussed how the band spent around 3 years together as per say, a family, and how they went through quite a lot to produce their single and/or album. In the middle of the article, they're discussing about what they have achieved previously and went they went through during the journey to success. At the ending of the article they talk about the release date of their new album.

This article is like an interview/information about what the band have been through and what they are planning to do in the future music wise. The tone of the message comes across quite sophisticated as the topic of this particular DPS is about careers - this correlates to the colour scheme being white red and black which is also quite calm. The target audience for kerrang is around 18-25 (estimated) which means that it does appeal to the specific audience.

The article has been laid out quite interesting with loads of colours and different fonts etc. Firstly, with the main image being quite big and placed nicely in the middle, its the first thing that catches your eye, as well as this, what they are wearing links to the theme of the magazine and the colours meaning that everything seems to look organised. With the heading, the heading is placed in the mid left pointing to the right which is a column of text, enhancing your eye to what is being said, overall the layout of the magazine looks appealing to the eye.
