Hammer Magazine

Hammer Magazine
Textural Analysis - Front Cover

With this front cover, there is a image in the centre of the magazine which is featuring the main focal point - “Slipknot” which contains all members promoting their new masks - therefore capturing fans attention straight away. The image is almost a full body shot, from a eye view, making them look like they’re almost reaching out to you. The contrast and saturation of the image are both quite high, there's a switch from dark colours ( like the shirts) to light colours ( skin/mask) which causes the overall image to look quite daunting - the effect has also happened due to the positioning of the people. You have some people standing quite straight - looking tall and intimidating, and then some people looking directly at the camera, some people looking away, overall creating a very unsettled feeling, which again in enhanced by the masks - in my opinion, the poses are representing the masks, for example, the man in the top left corner, his mask is scary/ mysterious, and with his pose, he’s standing still, no expression, making him look intimidating, as he’s also one of the tallest.

The lighting of the image has also helped the image to have this intimidating / scary look as with the low lights / high lights it has, you cant see key features of most of their faces, being their eyes.

Overall, i think that there is no focal point of the image, this is as they all look interesting/mysterious and because there is 7 of them, its hard to know where specifically to look, but your eyes naturally skim the whole magazine, which in my opinion is a good thing, it would further persuade a member of public to pick the whole magazine up just to see everything, if a corner was hidden for example.

The theme of the magazine ties in very well together, such as the masthead, and the font that's used, blends with the rest of the cover-lines, subheadings, etc. Firstly, the masthead, this was placed behind the image, showing the importance of the image, however the writing is still noticeable, meaning that you’re still able to know that this is a Hammer magazine. Above the masthead is the skyline, with this, the font is all bold/in capitals, and they're all very sharp and to the point, meaning that they read well, “New masks! New music! New chapter!” suggests that this was the FIRST magazine to get this exclusive interview of this new album being released, they have also shown this above the heading “Slipknot” where they have placed ‘The first interview!’ inside the bands logo. The logo has also been used in the skyline, this shows that the cover is to purely advertise that article.

The front cover also doesn't advertise any other article, meaning that apart from information about slipknot and this interview, nothing else is being shown - no use of teasers or cover-lines, which explains that this magazine in particular would please mostly slipknot fans - The font through out the front cover are all similar, its only “Surviving Paul. Life after joey. The road ahead” where are font is used, perhaps because this is where they need to be “serious” as they are describing what the band are doing now and how they’re moving on from the past. They have used white font when advertising “ Life. Death, Rebirth” which is the name of the album, however from that, unless you already knew, you’d have no idea what the means, and as they’re placed in ‘order’ and one below each other, you automatically read one after another, where as if they were just placed next to each other, you’d be way less intrigued to read on, as with an eye view, you’d already see everything written. They have also used a pull - quote from the article “The fire is back” symbolising what the article is about, which further persuades the public to pick up / read and buy this magazine, they have smartly, placed “the full story” below this to make the reader open and go to this article and see what this “full” story is, and what the story is, therefore the person is more likely to buy this article as it suggests it wont take them a little while to read this, they’ll need time.

The cover is also laid out so that no text interrupts the picture, apart from the white text, your focus is usually still always on that image, due to the alignment of everything, as well as the make up -  you have the image in the middle, then text on the left, the bottom and the top, which is all simple, nothing which will pull your attention away from the large image of the members in the middle. As they all look lost, sad, i think that the image relates to the text very well, “life. Death. Rebirth” as the member in the middle is almost reaching out, then the member next to him is slouching, looking like he’s hopeless, etc.

The language/text is very sharp, quick, leaves no time for anyone to interrupt or think, it creates a very serious but daunting mood, with some sense of excitement “the fire is back”. The sentences are very short but powerful. This magazine cover also matches the stereotypes of the genre, being either rock/metal, as the font is quite gory, looking like blood,the image is dark, mysterious, with some hints from language, being fire, death, etc. The make up also helps the magazine to catch that essence, along with the clothings, which is mostly black, and the masks, which look quite disturbing.

The bar-code is at the bottom left of the magazine, which also holds the date for the magazine, the price of the magazine, and the name of the publisher.
The magazine is published my TeamRock

Free CD

With the magazine, they gave away a free CD which is called Breaking Bangers - which is linked to the TV show, Breaking Bad. With this, the CD cover looks quite graphic - Cartoon  as the main image and background are animated. The main image is a mockery of the main character in Breaking Bad but looking like a zombie. This image takes up the whole cover. He is posed leaning towards the audience almost reaching out. The contrast and saturation of this image is high, meaning nice strong colours. The font and the colour the font also follows the Undead/Halloween type feel which is quite italic. The subheading of this CD cover reads “15 tracks of face-melting fury” Showing that there are 15 free tracks in that CD. “face melting” making a mockery out of the ‘metal’ ‘rock’ genre.

The back of the CD cover follows the same theme as the front, with the background and fonts being the same. At the bottom of the CD cover their is the logo for “Hammer” with some information below it, such as the website, the TeamRock logo, and license issues to do with the CD.

Contents Page

Contents page 1 - With this contents page, there are 4 images, one relatively big image in the centre which takes up around 2/3 of the page, again this image is of the band, slipknot. With this image, the band are posed from the knee up, where they are standing relatively straight. Their facial expressions because of the masks look again quite bland/scary. However they look determined. The background behind them in white, contrasting with their masks and what they’re wearing, being darker colours, there are a lot of shadows and highlights which makes the image stand out, i think the focal point of this image is the man standing in the middle or the centre as he is the only one pulling some sort of facial expression, he is also holding a fist. The lighting is quite decent, you are able to once again see what you need too, aka the masks, but again the faces are hidden, such as the eyes, which holds the mystery. For props, they’re wearing fake hands, which enhance the scariness. This image is the most important of the page and in medium sized font they advertise the page number in which the article is.

There are three smaller images at the bottom of the image, each image represents an article, for example, the image to the bottom left is an birds eye view image of the band “evil scarecrow” this image used to engage that fan-base to that article, this font once again holds the same size and with a red box behind it, advertises the page number for the article, the middle picture is the same, as well as the right, these images have all been sized and placed exact. Meaning that the presentation leads you from one side of the page to the other, making you want to read/see each article. The names of the sections / articles are also precisely and interestingly named - for example, one section is called Homophobia in metals, which you wouldn't expect to see, usually, so for example, that can catch attention.

The use of the masthead - “Hammer/Contents” - is written in the font which is used on the cover, which relates. Their is a red box behind the text which enhances the text shown - the title of the magazine is also written above the contents. This writing is in front of the image.
The overall layout of the contents page is very structured, you have the same pattern used throughout, being font choice, font size, image size, and image size. Below each image there is a text box which says a little bit about the article - to give the audience a teaser of what will be following.

The language of the text used in the contents page is overall quite formal, however there are some quite relaxed or chilled language used, creating a laid back tone, like the article will be an easy read. For example “And ask what the hell happened with Joey” This creates a humoured tone. JustRock publish this magazine.

Contents page 2 - The second contents page is a double page spread, the left side of the DPS is an small article which contains around 3 sections of text, one image, and an advert / give away at the bottom, the top of the page also has three small images which advertise more articles, these small three images are off the people who will be featured, they're all lined up symmetrically, for example, the one of the left, which is page 10, is advertising Devilment, and has an image of the group ‘leader’. The main image which is placed on the upper left, above the text, is a birds eye picture of the Editor in-chief who in this article is discussing his views on the slipknot album and article, the masthead for this is “The suspense was killing us” which is also technically a pull quote from either his interview of article. The font for this article and masthead is quite sophisticated / not as messy or colourful as the text from the other contents or front cover. The advertisement at the bottom is representing Hammer Digital edition and how you can win an ipad etc. The text for the “On the ipad edition” is again on a red background, as the previous contents page also had, as well as this, the picture on the advertised ipad is the front cover. The tone in this side of the contents is quite laid back with language such as “Easy now, no trolling” which can come across quite humorous. Also ending with “ Stay Metal!”.

The right side of this also has quite fixed structure, there is a long picture going down the middle which is sectioned into three pictures, all the same size in width and length which looks pleasing, these pictures again are advertising articles that are in the magazine, for example, the end picture is a picture of the band machine head playing life, which could suggest what that article is about. To the left of those images there are sections which advertise the articles. There are 9 sections representing the different main parts of the magazine, for this, the fonts are all black, and ‘headings’ are bigger font than the small text placed underneath which are giving a teaser of the article. The page numbers are written on the left of the little text and are a red font which will catch the readers eye. With this, the numbers of the article and the headings are the same size, meaning they both read smoothly, avoiding the audience having to search for the page number. On the right hand side of the images, there is a section of small grey/black writing which is going down the page which is credits - all the names of the people who are in charge and make the magazine, which is also in sections. For example, there is a section for the editors, the artists, the directors, and such.
The bottom right corner is a section where the publishers of the magazine are advertised, the writing is big enough so that it can be seen but not big enough to catch the attention of the readers straight away.

To the bottom left of this side, there is a small section of advertisements, almost shown as images, there is an advertisement for reviews, and for gigs, which can also be important for fans.

BOTH of the contents pages both advertise the magazine and genre well, with the colour schemes always staying the same, as well as the font sizes/colours, the genre of the magazine is portrayed well, by the ‘rude or quirky language used, the dark themes, dark images, and such, the audience will always be captured. The magazine was published by JustRock.

Double page spread

There are a total of 9 images on this DPS. The main image - being the image of the Girl on the right, is the biggest image featured on the DPS and is also the most important. The image is a medium shot - from chest up, and is of a lead singer advertising tour dates,as written in the top right hand corner of the image. The image has high lighting which enhances her pale skin and make up, with this, she is also looking away from the camera, (looking down) where is where the text is placed, therefore the eye of the audience will follow and read the text. The image also has a dull background, and most of what she is wearing are of different colours, such as her hat, which make her stand out way more. There are also 4 smaller images above this, which are small pictures of bands, for instance, the one on the far left is Mamozets, this image is a group image, quite dim lighting, plain background, not big enough to see detail, but big enough for you to see the band. These images have small text below them in a red box which advertise the band name and what page they are featured on, so even though this is not a contents page, pages are advertised throughout, this may be that a person interested in this band being featured, may like the bands above, (due to surveys etc).

Below this image, is a section of writing called “Out for blood” which is where the magazine make theory on who they believe may be touring next year. Below this, are 5 columns of text, each column has a band name, and below that, text which explains why they have that theory of the band possibly touring, this text is quite small but is written in bold font so it is still noticed. Underneath the third column, there is a small picture of a band ‘Blind guardian’ and then underneath the 5th column, is the lead singer of the band ‘Asking Alexandria these small pictures will be to help grab the attention of the audience into reading that text, so someone who is into Asking Alexandria, for example, will see this picture and wonder what the text is about.

The layout and structure of the right page is fairly simple. You have around 3 different sections, the top, being the three images, the main section, being the image, and then the bottom section, which is the advertisement. The font through-out that page is all relatively the same colour and size, most important parts of text always have a box behind the text with either the colour red or black, being a heading/sub-heading or masthead. The masthead of the DPS features of the left side, which reads “Revelations” which is a article based on monthly news. There is however a change of font where band names are written in the third section of the right page, where this font is different from the rest. On the bottom left hand side of the image, there is a textbox filled with information about the image, which is like a teaser.

The language used on the right side of the DPS is quite laid back, easily read, no complicated vocabulary.

The left side of the DPS follows the same colour scheme as the right - being white, red, and black. This side is split up into around 2 main sections, the first section being the top of the magazine down to the black line splitting the title and text. The Masthead is written in different font to the rest, and different colour, this font suits the genre much more, looking messy, with that ‘Grunge Look. There is also a skyline above this, which contains language suiting the genre as well, ‘Heavy Fucking Metal’ this font is the same as what is used in the rest of the article. “Bloodstock 2015 is go!’ is the heading of this page, this gives an in site of what the rest of the article will be about - blockstock festival - There is then a subheading below this black line separating the text / masthead. There are 4 columns/rows of text with an image placed in the top middle of this, and then a smaller image on the bottom right of that image. This main image on the page is of the band being featured/wrote about. The image next to this, is of artwork from the band on the wall, maybe an album cover, this image is too small to see details, which is what the text explains. Below all this text, on the bottom left, is a pull-qoute from this text “Too bad its still a year or so away”.

The language through out this article is sophisticated - compare to the skyline, as they are advertising a festival, the tone is set to be quite serious/yet exciting, as this article holds information such as ticket prices etc, it provides information / entertainment.

This DPS supports the overall genre of the magazine to be well, being rock/metal, with this, they are used the ‘right’ fonts, colours, and language expected. This is also backed up by the groups they are featuring, the festivals they are featuring, and such, which and who are all metal groups, the images used are all also quite dark, hard to see, no bright colours, being pink etc. The images are also not planned out perfectly, for instance, the band pictures are outside their tour buses etc, not all studio planned, apart from main images, such as the singer on the right. This magazine is published by JustRock.

Preliminary task

Preliminary task – LSC magazine planning

This magazine consists of a medium close-up of a student, from the waist up, which would be required in my magazine, the shot is also placed over the text or masthead / in the middle of the magazine with text around her, showing her importance. The magazine also has coverlines spread around the magazine cover advertising what the rest of the magazine will hold, for example, one of the cover line on the front of the magazine say “Spice up your resume” with this, the text has been placed word for word separately underneath each other, which is appealing to the eye, this also appeals to students as it’s something to do with college and it’s something that can benefit them in the future, these kind of things would be helpful for me to write about when producing my college magazine. The teasers underneath also help to explain, for instance, “(And cover letter too!)” to further intense or add that shock factor to the article.

The masthead, being “College” is written in a typical college life font, for example, a font you would expect to see on a hoodie or t-shirt colleges can sometimes give, etc, this is so the font will look familiar to readers as well as seeming more easier and laid back to read, as the font isn't complicated or too small, as well as this, the font is quite big, which will help it to stand out. Despite the basic title, “College” it will automatically appeal to college students, as college magazines aren't that popular, students would mostly likely to be interested in what the magazine will cover, as well as the magazine being free, students will want to pick up the magazine.

The date of the magazine is written quite small on the upper right hand side of the magazine, underneath the masthead written in red, this tiny text is written in black and red. The issue number is written in small black text, to possibly stand out, and then the date, written in red, is next to the issue number. As well as this, the edition is written on the opposite side of the magazine, in the same size font and colour. The barcode is placed on the bottom left of the magazine, the size of the bar code is quite big compare to the text, however, this can be to advertise the fact that the magazine is “100% free”, The barcode is also the only white part of the magazine, which makes the barcode stand out more.

The type of Cover Lines and teasers are written to appeal to the target audience will is college students, this can mean late teens to mid-20’s etc.  For instance, one cover line on this magazine, “ABC family Greek exclusive interview” will appeal to the audience as the people who they are interviewing will have an ‘importance’ to people around the age, due to them being focused on in the media and social networks, we also have another cove line talking about sexuality, which may appeal to young people in general who are afraid about telling people that they’re possibly gay, it may help to make them feel like it’s okay.

With the sections of this contents page, it is sectioned depending on the genre/what will be in the articles, in total there are 6 main sections, with smaller sections inside of those, numbering the key pages through out the magazine. As an example of this, there is a section called entertainment, there is then a sub-heading giving a teaser of what will be in the article, then below this, there is further writing usually stating or quoting something from the article.

There are only four images on this contents page, one quite small, centred in between the sections of the article, this links from the front cover. The three images at the top of the page are pictures of people/ events which will feature in the articles, for example, on the top right of the page, their is a picture of someone who is featured in the interview, which is also advertised on the front page, to further attract the audience.

This magazine only has one page for contents, and provides no editorial letter.

Photoshop workshop notes

Photoshop workshop

1)      File -> New ( International paper / A4 )

2)      Open rulers for correct measurements, this will allow gaps for things in your magazines such as mastheads which can overlap the boarder and also skylines.

3)      Go on curser, drag arrow to 0.5 (1) all the way round the paper to create a boarder, this boarder must be 5cm wide in both sides of paper.

4)      Open a new tab for things such as your first image, this will open a completely separate page with that image etc on it, with this, you can either edit your image or drag the image using the curser tool and drag it back onto the other page.
5)      When editing, always make sure you label or name your layers, as well as this, always keep your layer tab open in case you want to move around your images or place text OVER a layer etc.
6)      Make sure layers are unlocked – this allows further editing

7)      For example – Pull out image, when layer is unlocked, and drag onto other page, and the image should appear.

8)        Ctrl + t = Transform button  (always hold shift, this allows correct resizing)
9)      Once your happy with the transformation, press enter
10)   Text tool – allows text to be placed onto the image, can also use ctrl +t to resize text

Clicking the eye to the left side of a layer will hide the layer, vice versa, if you click the eye again.

Rock Sound Analysis

This front page of Rock Sound magazine is laid out so that the first thing you notice is the image of 'Calum Hood' and the masthead  - 5SOS. This immediately will entice that fanbase into picking up the magazine and possibly buying. This image is placed in the centre, meaning that text is either surrounding the main image or is on top, the image is also placed over the name of the magazine showing his importance. The pose he is doing is quite relaxed or 'silly' showing that the article based on 5 seconds of summer is a more relaxed feed. The lighting is quite balanced, therefore there is no enhanced shadows or highlights. What he is wearing is also quite laid-back, aka just a vest and some wrist bands.

The Use of fonts on the cover of this magazine changes depending on what's being written. For example, the font will change when the band name is written, compare to what font is used for the brand of the magazine. Overall, the font for the magazine looks quite messy, italic and unsophisticated. The only area where the font looks organised is where they are advertising the free posters. The layout of the magazine follows the same route, quite unorganised and placed differently to how, per say, vibe. With this, the text is not specifically placed on either the left or the right, in columns, its just placed conveniently, there's also nothing on the front cover which links to the contents, nothing which advertises what the rest of the magazine holds, apart from the quote placed "not everyone's going to like us" which suggests what their article will be based on.

Analysing music magazines

Group task – Analysing music magazines

  1. How many pages are used for the contents – 1 page
  2. Are all editorial items listed – Not all items are listed, for example, page 27, which is a poster and a DPS, but isn't listed in the contents page.
  3. How many sections are there, and what are they? How have the sections and pages been organised? is there any other? consider columns, alignment, captions, textbox's? - 1 Feedback section, 1 news section, 1 live reviews section, poster section, the heros issue section, feature section, album section, gig guide section, the ultimate rockstar test section, one image with sub-heading and small text, one section in the lower right hand corner which is an advertisement, and beside this on the lower right is an introduction from the editor 'james' with a small image to accompany. The sections have been organised with the image being on the left, taking up around half the page, then the text (group of sections being the contents) on the right.  The introduction is than below the image with quite a small text and image as it has lower importance. The advertisement is also quite small and in the lower right hand corner so that it doesn't catch the audience's eye.  The heading of the image is covered with the picture to make the audience automatically look at the image. The caption of the image is at the bottom, where after you've seen the image, you can then see a little text etc to explain. The font sizes through out the contents page is relatively small so it doesn't look overwhelming.
  4. Which images are used? think of shot type, framing, lighting and other elements of mise en scene. What are the connotations? how do the images link to the listenings in the content page? - There are a total of two images on the contents page - the first image, being the main image of Andrew W.K who is advertising his free shirt which you can win, which links with the caption, which is advertising how you can enter to win the shirt, this then links with the text below. The second image is then the editor of the magazine being James - this image links with the text next to the image being his introduction.
  5. How does the contents page reflect the front cover - The contents page reflects the front cover as firstly theyre both quite messy and unorganised, the images both cover the main writing and then the fonts are both different along with the colours of texts. The contents page also explains or shows everything that was on the cover. They both also have a red box at the top with main information in.
Double spread analysis

The piece of writing was about a band called Chemical Romance the band , this article was explaining their journey while recording or producing their album for the past three years. At the beginning of the article,  they discussed how the band spent around 3 years together as per say, a family, and how they went through quite a lot to produce their single and/or album. In the middle of the article, they're discussing about what they have achieved previously and went they went through during the journey to success. At the ending of the article they talk about the release date of their new album.

This article is like an interview/information about what the band have been through and what they are planning to do in the future music wise. The tone of the message comes across quite sophisticated as the topic of this particular DPS is about careers - this correlates to the colour scheme being white red and black which is also quite calm. The target audience for kerrang is around 18-25 (estimated) which means that it does appeal to the specific audience.

The article has been laid out quite interesting with loads of colours and different fonts etc. Firstly, with the main image being quite big and placed nicely in the middle, its the first thing that catches your eye, as well as this, what they are wearing links to the theme of the magazine and the colours meaning that everything seems to look organised. With the heading, the heading is placed in the mid left pointing to the right which is a column of text, enhancing your eye to what is being said, overall the layout of the magazine looks appealing to the eye.

Induction Evaluation

Induction Assignment - Evaluation

For the induction assignment, I was asked to produce a DPS for a magazine of my choice, within this magazine, we had to have some journalistic writing. In this writing we had to discuss our opinion on whether we feel that music piracy is destroying the industry. So the first thing we had to do, before creating the DPS and the final writing, was research some facts/statistics to back up our point.

As I mentioned previously, during the assignment, we had to research many different things including statistics and facts to back up our argument on whether we agree or disagree that music piracy is killing the industry - I got given to argue that music piracy IS destroying the music industry. With this, it required me to look up many things such as what artists agree, why they agree, and there opinion on music piracy, facts showing sales dropping since music piracy - and what music piracy is, what forms it comes in.

With researching, I think a strength of mine was finding facts / statistics with sources to back up the information I got, I also added an opinion to each fact or statement to show whether I agree with what's being said. A weakness of mine when researching was finding artists opinions, I feel that if I had the chance to re write my journalistic writing I would go into more detail and find a more variety of artists opinions on music piracy - and research some artists who have been effected by music piracy. I also had to keep in mind my target audience, which was late teens to mid-20, this was important as I would have to keep in mind what and how I would need to write to appeal to my audience

With my journalistic writing I feel as if I had more weaknesses than strengths - this is as my writing skills aren't as good as what they could be, I also always find that I struggle to comprehend and get down all my ideas to do with this subject without writing too much waste in-between. However, I feel as if I got all the required skills down when looking at and producing journalistic writing. My strength would be that I feel as if I went into detail with all my opinions, showing that I can back up any ideas I think of. If I had a change to re-produce my writing I would probably re structure my layout.

We had to use InDesign to produce and layout our double page spread. Before this, I had never heard of or used the application before, considering this, I feel as if I did a relatively good job. My strengths of using InDesign and setting out my work would probably be that I feel as if I used a good range of font size and images. This is as I used around 2 different fonts and around 5 different images - however, if I could improve one thing, being my weakness, I would probably improve the way I laid out my text - because i had a lot of text, the DPS ended up looking quite squashed and unappealing.

For web publishing skills, being blogging, I feel like this whole process was fine for me as I had a blogger before the induction started so I was familiar with the process of uploading or submitting files etc on blogs, therefore I believe I had no specific weaknesses.

The audience feedback was an important part of this task as it helps me to be able to know what I have to improve on in the next task / main parts of my coursework. This is with both writing skills including my journalistic writing and my InDesign skills. It’s also important to get feedback from more than one person as people have different views, aka having feedback from both a student and a teacher will allows you to get feedback from different viewpoints.

Overall, if I was able to re-produce my work, or was given the chance to alter 4 things about my DPS:

 - It would firstly be to change the amount of text I had on my DPS - due to me having a lot of journalistic writing on my magazine it was quite hard to position and fit all the text on the page without the page looking too crammed.

 - Secondly, I would change the layout of my page - such as where the images were placed and how they were sized / positioned.

 - Another thing I would change would be my journalistic writing - I would change the things I wrote about in my writing / I would include more short facts and more opinions from artists

 - Lastly, I would add more colour to my DPS - as for this, I only used black and white, which can be boring.
